A woman from Makaha was recently charged with embezzling over $44,000 in union dues. The 52-year-old woman, Pamela Watanabe, allegedly took the money when she served as the financial secretary for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 142.
According to prosecutors, Watanabe used the stolen funds for personal expenses such as shopping and travel. The embezzlement reportedly occurred over a period of 18 months.
Watanabe now faces multiple counts of theft and forgery. If convicted, she could face up to 20 years in prison.
The union has since released a statement condemning Watanabe’s actions and reassuring its members that steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The case will now proceed to trial, where Watanabe will have the opportunity to defend herself against the charges.
