The City Council is planning to transfer a parcel of land in Kailua to the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands for the development of Native Hawaiian homes.
This decision was made in response to the housing crisis in Hawaii, where many Native Hawaiians struggle to find affordable housing. The parcel of land, located on the Windward side of Oahu, is approximately 30 acres and was initially acquired by the city for a future public housing development.
City Council members believe that transferring the land to the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands will provide much-needed housing for Native Hawaiians while also addressing the shortage of affordable homes in the state. The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands is responsible for developing and managing lands for Native Hawaiians, and this transfer will allow them to create a new community for those in need of housing.
Local residents and community leaders have expressed their support for the plan, hoping that it will help address the housing crisis and provide a safe and affordable place for Native Hawaiians to live.
The transfer of the land is still pending approval by the City Council, but if successful, it could be a significant step towards addressing the housing needs of Native Hawaiians in the state.
